Mondi expands Russian business

first_img10 December 2007South African-based paper producer Mondi is expanding its international presence following its listing on the JSE at the beginning of the month, announcing a €525-million (about R5.1-billion) project to modernise and expand its pulp and paper mill in Syktyvkar, Russia.“All main equipment contracts have been agreed and construction is to commence in April 2008, with completion scheduled by the end of 2010,” the company said in a statement last week. “The project will enhance Syktyvkar’s low-cost position, with the additional volume of uncoated fine paper and containerboard being supplied to the high-growth domestic Russian market.”Engineering News reported last month that the project involved the construction of new wood-handling facilities, a recovery boiler and turbine, a lime kiln and pulp dryer, as well as upgrades to two chemical pulp lines and improvements to machinery.Mondi chief executive David Hathorn told Engineering News that the project should slash operating costs and improve efficiencies, while also slightly increasing production by 190 000 tonnes per year, 60 000 tonnes of which will be sold into the pulp market, which is being driven by Chinese demand. He added that the modernisation of the plant was probably only the start of the group’s activities in the territory, which is arguably the only major unexploited softwood resource left in the world.“In fact, forests cover more than 70% of the territory, while swamps cover about 15%, making forestry activity attractive but difficult, given swarming mosquitoes and mud in the warmer periods,” Engineering News said. “This means that felling is generally confined to the icy winter months.”The company was spun-off from former parent Anglo American plc in July this year, and has looked at expansion to secure its position as an independent integrated paper and packaging group. Its main interests are in emerging markets, such as South Africa and in various locations in Eastern Europe.According to Mondi, Mondi Business Paper Syktyvkar, with an annual capacity of 580 000 tonnes of paper per year, is one of the largest producers in the Russian pulp and paper industry. In addition, the Syktyvkar mill controls 11 logging companies in the Komi Republic that supply the mill with wood.Mondi Packaging Paper, which operates within the same complex, has an annual capacity of more than 200 000 tonnes of packaging paper, delivering around 60% of the total white top paper market in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.SAinfo reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Geocaching in all seasons: Tips for the all-weather cacher

first_imgCold weatherBring hand warmers. Looking inside tree stumps, under benches, and everywhere in between can mean some time without gloves on. Bring hand warmers along and stay warm and ready for the next cache.Have a warm beverage on hand. Make sure you have a thermos to keep your drink nice and toasty!Solve Mystery Caches. If the temperature is in the negatives, it might be too cold to search for caches outside. Instead, sit by the fireplace and solve some tough Mystery Caches. You’ll have a whole new set of caches to find when the weather warms up. Extreme weather shouldn’t stop you from adding more smileys to your map. This year, earn two new souvenirs by finding a cache or attending an event on December 31 and January 1! What are your extreme weather caching suggestions? Let us know in the comments below!Share with your Friends:More Hot weatherBring plenty of water. Geocaching can be hard work, so stay hydrated for the day. What you thought would be an easy find could take much longer than anticipated.Go for some paddle caches. Hot weather is the perfect time to complete your Fizzy Grid and find caches near the water. Grab or rent a canoe, kayak, boat, or inner tube and just keep swimming.Hide your own cache. Walk around your neighborhood, scope out places that could use a geocache, then head inside and start planning! Snowy weatherBring adequate TOTT (Tools of the Trade). Pens can freeze in extremely cold weather, so bring a pencil to assure that you can sign the log and earn your smiley. Shovels may also come in handy in case you need to clear snow from the ground to expand your search.Get creative with your transportation. Strap on snowshoes, cross country skis, or borrow a snowmobile and travel from geocache to geocache in style. If you’re a Premium Member, run a Pocket Query for geocaching attributes. There are attributes for caches available during winter, accessible by snowmobile, and more!Make a geocaching Bucket List. If the snow is piling up outside, stay inside and plan your next geocaching outing. Search the map for your dream geocaches—maybe they’re in a great location, have a rare D/T ratio, require special tools, or are amazingly creative hides. A New Era For Corporate Culture: iPhone Use Doubles in the Enterprise

first_imgMassive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… iPhone use has doubled in the enterprise since last summer when Apple released the 3GS. The big bump in sales helped Apple post $3.38 billion in profits this past quarter. More than 70% of Fortune 100 companies are now testing the iPhone as their smartphone of choice. A big driver is iPhone’s support for Microsoft Exchange. The news highlights why Google is planning to launch its next Nexus One as an enterprise device: The corporate market has smartphone fever. The news also points to the inherent weakness of the RIM Blackberry in comparison to the iPhone and the Nexus One. Touch devices such as the iPhone and the Nexus One are designed for applications and accessing the Web. The Blackberry is designed as a messaging device. But the enterprise is going through a shift that affects not just what device is used but how the overall organization functions. That shift is embodied in the deeper commitment to collaboration technologies in the enterprise. As mobile technologies become more robust, the affects across the organization will be seen in a number of ways.Operations and other non-customer facing tasks will be done more often outside the walls of the corporate office. People will increasingly work at home. Mobile devices will be pretty much required by knowledge workers.Telepresence will become more predominant. Corporations are investing in unified communications technologies to allow for better video conferencing over any type of device, including smartphones.Technology providers will need technologies to work across any device. You see this trend beginning to evolve. RIM and IBM announced an integration at Lotusphere last week. Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections will be loaded onto Blackberry devices. Big Blue is also developing applications for the Android OS to allow for encrypted email, using Lotus NotesTraveler, the IBM technology. Traveler is now available on the iPhone as well. The Blackberry still has a significant lead over the iPhone, and the Nexus One is but a baby. But Apple and Google’s intentions are pretty clear, and RIM is not blind to the shift, as exemplified with its IBM partnership. Mailbox Takes Its Email App To iPad, With Android Waiting In The Wings

first_imgWhat it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … What has Mailbox founder Gentry Underwood and his team been up to since selling the email-app maker to Dropbox for a reported $100 million in March?Mostly working on new versions of the product – like an iPad version of the app, which is coming out Thursday morning on Apple’s App Store.Like the original iPhone version, which attracted a million users at breakneck speed, Mailbox for iPad lets you swipe messages off to the right or left to handle them. A short swipe to the right archives them, while a long swipe deletes them; a short swipe to the left “snoozes” messages for later reading, while a long swipe puts them in folders based on actions: “to read,” “to buy,” or “to watch.”Mailbox for iPad doesn’t change that basic concept for email handling, but it does add a column to let you read messages alongside a list of messages in your inbox. Tags:#App Design#Dropbox#email#Mailbox#mobile apps Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Resisting Design TemptationReadWrite sat down recently with Underwood to talk about the challenges of rethinking an app originally meant for smartphones for tablets. Underwood, a former designer at Ideo, had lots of thoughts.“[Tablets] are these weird hybrid devices that sit in between,” said Underwood. “They’re part luxury mobile phone, and they’re part makeshift desktop experience.”That made it harder, not easier, he said.“Constraint is the friend of design,” Underwood said. “It’s easier for us to create a simple mail experience [for the phone]. We have to resist the temptation to take all these pixels and put in all these bells and whistles.” The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologycenter_img Related Posts Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement That echoes comments recently made by Luke Wroblewski, creator of a polling app called Polar. For Polar’s Web version, Wroblewski left the center of the screen largely blank, rather than alter the app’s core function—because filling up pixels didn’t add to the user’s experience.Dropbox founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi have given the Mailbox team permission to ignore suggestions from their new colleagues for cool new features, Underwood said. When Underwood showed Houston and Ferdowsi mockups of all the design suggestions and asked what the Mailbox team should work on, Houston told him, “That’s something you have to answer. What’s best for the customer?”Putting Gmail On NoticeWhat would be really exciting, though, is an Android version. Underwood acknowledged that Mailbox was working on Android next, but didn’t reveal any specific plans for the product.(See also How Google Is Wooing Developers To Make Apps For Android First.)Anyone familiar with Android, though, can see clearly where Mailbox is headed – and why it would be a killer app, challenging Google’s Gmail on its own turf. That’s because Android’s notification system is superior to the notification functions built into Apple’s iOS mobile operating system in a key way: Developers, if they choose, can add functional features to the notifications that drop down on the screen, allowing users to take actions without having to launch into the app.For Mailbox, that would likely mean that its swipe-right-or-left convention for email handling could be ported into notifications, allowing users to swiftly handle emails as they come in without leaving the task they’re working on. (I suggested this to Underwood, but he declined to comment on the notion.)Dealing with email purely through notifications is not something that Mailbox could do today on Apple’s iPhone or iPad. But it’s such a logical extension of the email app’s design brilliance, it’s unimaginable that Underwood and team aren’t thinking about it.Photo by TechCrunch owen thomaslast_img read more

Can machine learning secure your competitive advantage?

first_imgTags:#AI#Artifical intelligence#featured#Internet of Things#IoT#Machine Learning#ML#top Related Posts Business dynamics are evolving with every passing second. There is no doubt that the competition in today’s business world is much more intense than it was a decade ago. Companies are fighting to hold on to any advantages.Digitalization and the introduction of machine learning into day-to-day business processes have created a prominent structural shift in the last decade. The algorithms have continuously improved and developed.Every idea that has completely transformed our lives was initially met with criticism. Acceptance is always followed by skepticism, and only when the idea becomes reality does the mainstream truly accept it. At first, data integration, data visualization, and data analytics were no different.See also: How to start incorporating machine learning into enterpriseIncorporating data structures into business processes to reach a valuable conclusion is not a new practice. The methods, however, have continuously improved. Initially, such data was only available to the government, where they used it to make defense strategies. Ever heard of Enigma? In the modern day, continuous development and improvement in data structures, along with the introduction of open source cloud-based platforms, has made it possible for everyone to access data. The commercialization of data has minimized public criticism and skepticism.Companies now realize that data is knowledge and knowledge is power. Data is probably the most important asset a company owns. Businesses go to great lengths to obtain more information, improve the processes of data analytics and protect that data from potential theft. This is because nearly anything about a business can be revealed by crunching the right data.It is impossible to reap the maximum benefit from data integration without incorporating the right kind of data structure. The foundation of a data-driven organization is laid on four pillars. It becomes increasingly difficult for any organization to thrive if it lacks any of the following features.Four key elementsHere are the four key elements of a comprehensive data management system:Hybrid data managementUnified governanceData science and machine learningData analytics and visualizationHybrid data management refers to the accessibility and repeated usage of the data. The primary step for incorporating a data-driven structure in your organization is to ensure that the data is available. Then you proceed by bringing all the departments within the business on board. The primary data structure unifies all the individual departments in a company and streamlines the flow of information between those departments. If there is a communication gap between the departments, it will hinder the flow of information. Mismanagement of communication will result in chaos and havoc instead of increasing the efficiency of business operations.Initially, strict rules and regulations governed data and restricted people from accessing it. The new form of data governance makes data accessible, but it also ensures security and protection. You can learn more about the new European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law and unified data governance over here in Rob Thomas’ GDPR session. The other two aspects of data management are concerned with data engineering. A spreadsheet full of numbers is of no use if it cannot be tailored to deduce some useful insights about business operations. This requires analytical skills to filter out irrelevant information. There are various visualization technologies that make it possible and easier for people to handle and comprehend data.Want to learn more about the topic? Every one of my medals is a story of struggle: Mary Kom

first_imgBy Poonam MehraNew Delhi, Nov 8 (PTI) Every medal is a story of struggle, says the indomitable M C Mary Kom, who considers her fifth Asian Championship gold medal special as it came despite the many roles she has had to play outside the ring in the past one year.Mary Kom, a five-time world champion and Olympic bronze- medallist, scripted history today by becoming the first boxer to claim five gold medals at the continental meet in the Vietnamese city of Ho Chi Minh.”This medal is very special to me just like all other medals I have won because it has its own story of struggles. Every medal I have won is a story of a difficult struggle. I am hoping this medal, which has come after I became an MP, will enhance my reputation even further. I hope my stature grows,” Mary Kom told PTI in an interview.Besides being an active and top-level boxer, the 35- year-old is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, whose attendance in the house has never been brought into question, a government observer for boxing in the country and a “very busy” mother to her three sons.Add to this, she is also involved in the running of her academy in Imphal, along with her husband Onler Kom.”I have been an active MP, I am attending Parliament regularly and despite that I trained hard for this championship. Since I am a government observer, I have to be present at meetings related to the running of the sport as well. I hope people realise how tough it is,” she said.advertisement”I have been juggling so many roles. I am a mother too, I have three sons to take care of. I dont even know how I manage to pull it off sometimes,” she added. The diminutive Manipuri has been the face of womens boxing not just in India but all over the world, earning the nickname Magnificent Mary from the International Boxing Association (AIBA) back in 2010.She was last year honoured with the AIBA Legends award for her long and sparkling career, which also includes a gold medal at the the 2014 Asian Games. The pace of her life is sometimes hard to keep up with, admits Mary Kom but throwing in the towel is not an option for her.”After this (the Asian Championships), I have to travel to Lausanne for an IOC athletes forum. And I hate journeys now. The travelling wears me down, it is actually quite horrible to go from one airport to another in a matter of days. But you cant walk away from your responsibilities and commitments,” she explained.Nearly two decades as a boxer and Mary Kom still remains a force to reckon with despite the fact that womens boxing is now an Olympic sport, which has widened the competition pool.Even at the Asian Championships, Mary Kom was hardly pushed by her opponents, who seemed reluctant to be on the offensive against her.”They are already so scared of me, my five world titles and reputation are also helping in some way. They seem scared of touching me. It can actually get quite frustrating but I have to keep my calm, whether the opponent is scared or rough and tough. I have to adjust, control and handle immediately in a matter of seconds,” she said.”The competition has certainly improved but I have responded well to it because this weight category suits me,” she added, referring to the switch she made from 51kg to 48kg category at the fag end of last year.”I dont have the burden of putting on weight. This weight (48kg) is natural for my body. This category, in fact, works best for me. Some of the boxers I faced here (in Vietnam) have competed against me in 51kg category. It felt nice to beat them, a huge morale-booster for me,” she elaborated. Her next target is the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and when asked how she has managed to keep the motivation level in tact, Mary Kom said, “I dont know how I do it, I can only thank god. One reason that I can think of is that I dont have any major fitness issues.”I have a very fit body and have never faced any major injury problems. So yes, the secret to my success is my fit body,” she signed off. PTI PM AH AHlast_img read more
