Alec Baldwin Speaks Out For Turkeys

first_imgToday, the national nonprofit Farm Sanctuary is thrilled to announce that Alec Baldwin is speaking out for turkeys, who are among the most abused animals on Earth, as their 2016 Adopt a Turkey Project spokesperson!Alec Baldwin Speaks Out for Turkeys“Like most people, I don’t like thinking about things that make me feel bad,” said Alec. “But I also don’t like animal suffering, so I feel the need to speak out about it. At least 46 million turkeys suffer heartbreaking fear and pain before being killed each and every Thanksgiving. This year, I’m supporting Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey Project because turkeys are just as friendly, smart, and full of feeling as my dogs, and they deserve to be treated better. I hope you’ll join me by sponsoring.”Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey Project has inspired compassionate conversation about society’s relationships with turkeys and the measures we can take to improve the terrible conditions they regularly endure on commercial farms. Now celebrating its 30th year, the project has saved hundreds of lives while inspiring countless individuals to sponsor a turkey who resides at one of Farm Sanctuary’s three shelters in New York and California. For a one-time donation of $30, turkey sponsors receive a special adoption certificate with a color photo and fun details about their new friend.last_img read more

Tottenham Hotspur severely weakened ahead of Champions League clash with Barcelona

first_imgThe Daily Star reported today about immense injury problems Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona are going through ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League encounter. After suffering a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan on the opening matchday, the Spurs are obliged to achieve a positive result against the Catalans, but it’s going far from simple, considering six first-team members will skip the match.Apart from the second-choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm, Jan Vertonghen, Serge Aurier, Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli, and Christian Eriksen are all set to remain on the stands due to various physical problems. The only positive thing for Mauricio Pochettino is the return of Hugo Lloris, who will be ready to take the field from the first minute according to some reports.🗣️ Mauricio on injuries: “We have players with different injuries – it’s not a pattern that happens from something specific. We are not victims though – we must feel strong. Every player must feel they can win and achieve what we want.”#COYS pic.twitter.com/EkOaRW2pcr— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) October 2, 2018David Villa, SpainQuiz: How much do you know about David Villa? Bhattacharya says India had an unfortunate day

first_imgThe India national team lost 2-0 against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their second match of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.After winning 4-1 against Thailand in their first match on the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, many thought India would qualify to the next round without a problem. But today the Indian national team failed to win against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), losing at the end 2-0.“We were unfortunate today. We wasted silly chances and we had to pay for it. We created more chances than UAE and yet we lost the game,” India goalkeeper Atanu Bhattacharya told Goal.AIFF wants to change the face of Indian football Manuel R. Medina – August 7, 2019 The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is working closely with FIFA in order to fix the state of football in the country that has two first division football leagues.“We had scored from those chances on previous occasions but we failed today. (Sunil) Chhetri missed two chances, Ashique (Kuruniyan) also a couple. Then (Sandesh) Jhingan’s header went wide by a few yards.”“The strikers should have been more clinical. India started well but I felt the thrust went missing in the second half,” he added.“It was not Chhetri’s day. He had converted these chances on numerous occasions. He jumped well between two defenders and credit must be given to the keeper as well for that save (in the first half).”last_img read more

It would be one of eight shelters going up in all parts of the city.Residents argue the homeless moving in would threaten the kids attending the nearby Grant Elementary and bring visual blight to their charming nook in San Diego. The city attempted to explain the homeless that would be helped are the people we don’t see, the mothers with children or the men living in their cars. While you don’t have to be sober to get admitted into the shelter, you cannot have a felony record.  The idea being San Diego can avoid the scale of the homeless crisis being seen in Seattle and San Francisco if we act now.Councilmember Chris Ward says if the residents have any recourse, that he will take their concerns to the developers who can address them while they’re building the shelter. He also mentions this is Mayor Faulconer’s plan, which is expected to start going into effect by the end of this year. Pride Music The Soundtrack For The Black Panther Party

first_imgNews Inside Music & The Black Panther Party pride-music-soundtrack-black-panther-party Prev Next Photos: WireImage.com Twitter Prince To Mary J. Blige: 15 Black Music Milestones More than a half-century later, the powerful influence of the Black Panther Party still resonates through musicBillyGRAMMYs Feb 23, 2018 – 12:51 pm Billy Johnson Jr.Music has played an integral role in communicating the message of the black power movement, specifically the works of the Black Panther Party.Just two years after the signing of the Civil Rights Act, in 1966 Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland, Calif., to enforce the end of discrimination against blacks and to advocate for better jobs, education, housing, and treatment from police. One of the most influential ways musicians helped the cause was by writing melodic, sing-along songs about the movement that were affirming to black power supporters while also making the message more palatable for music fans who may have shunned Newton and Seale’s rhetoric for being too extreme.Just a glimpse of James Brown’s impact in spreading the pride of black power can be witnessed during his 1969 appearance on Hugh Hefner’s “Playboy After Dark” television series. The Godfather of Soul is cheerfully embraced by the mostly white audience that claps and bobs to the music as he sings the repetitive in-your-face, pro-black chorus, “Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud!” Even though only one woman is captured in the footage actually singing along to the very easy to follow call-and-response lyrics, there is no denying Brown’s influence in sharing the movement’s sentiments to the masses via this Top 10 pop hit.Brown was just one of many soul artists who used their platform to create Black Panther Party-influenced protest songs during the 1960s and beyond. Nina Simone, who already had a long history of singing about the need for social change, joined the movement by taking an even stronger stance for the issues.Author Rickey Vincent highlighted Simone’s musical shift in Party Music, his 2013 book about the music of the Black Panther Party.”As an entertainer, the classically trained prodigy had established herself as a musical tour de force as she played concert halls from her native North Carolina to Paris in the early 1960s,” he wrote about the “Mississippi Goddam” singer, who received a posthumous Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. “However, as events in the civil rights movement compelled a reorganization of her views, she developed a protest music repertoire and produced piercing commentary on the changes evolving at the time. In her concerts she openly defied and challenged her predominantly white audiences, often claiming from the stage, ‘This next song is only for the black people that are here.'””[Black power music was] an unbelievable soundtrack to our state of existence.” — Chuck DEven though Motown acts including Marvin Gaye, the Supremes and the Temptations released pro-black songs, label founder Berry Gordy created a subsidiary specifically for more militant works. The Black Forum imprint released eight albums and one single from 1970 to 1973. The roster included Black Panther Party members Kwame Ture (formerly Stokely Carmichael), classically trained pianist and singer Elaine Brown, and funk band the Lumpen.Brown and the Lumpen sang powerful messages like “Until We’re Free” and “Free Bobby Now,” respectively. Music wasn’t their only role in the organization. Brown also served as the chair of the party from 1974 to 1977 and the members of Lumpen maintained regular party duties when they were not performing for a Panther event. The Last Prophets formed in 1968 and influenced Gil Scott-Heron with their political, spoken word that would serve as the precursors to hip-hop. Scott-Heron’s pivotal “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” song (GRAMMY Hall Of Fame, 2014) was released in 1970. His works have been sampled by hip-hop’s biggest stars, including Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Kanye West, Nas, and numerous others.Chuck D, frontman for the politically charged hip-hop group Public Enemy who debuted in 1987, cites Scott-Heron among his list of influences that also include the pro-black works of Mayfield, Brown, Sly And The Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, the Staple Singers, and Aretha Franklin.Chuck D recalls how the public rallied for radio stations to play message music.”The music that we all grew up on was on the radio and radio DJs had to play the music that the people wanted,” he says. “So the radio stations had to abide by that or be considered out,” adding that the era of black power music was “an unbelievable soundtrack to our state of existence.”The Black Panther Party influences were certainly felt in Public Enemy’s image and music. Instead of having background dancers a la other hip-hop acts, Chuck D & Co. were backed on stage by the S1W (Security Of The First World), who wore all black with berets or camouflage fatigues.”It was a combination of how the Panther Party had their gear and also how the nation of Islam had their drills,” Chuck D explains.Public Enemy’s anthems like “Fight The Power” and “By The Time I Get To Arizona” demanded equal rights for blacks, and the latter helped the Martin Luther Jr. holiday get reinstated in Arizona in 1992.The Black Panther Party had a personal impact on Chuck D as well.”I was a recipient of the Black Panther Party free lunch program when I visited my relatives in Manhattan,” he recalls. “And then on Long Island, when I was around 10 and 11, they had people in the Black Panther Party who would be on the college campuses for the summer programs and all of the kids from Roosevelt High School and Freeport High School in Hempstead were there for the Afro-American experience. We were well versed in the Panther Party when we were 10, 11 years old.” Inside Music & The Black Panther Party Prince To Mary J. Tupac Shakur’s “Panther Power” was officially released posthumously in 2003; Common and Dead Prez teamed with the Last Poets for 2004’s “Panthers.”When Chuck D was asked if he felt Public Enemy’s work had achieved significance because the group managed to stay true to their sometimes controversial pro-black message and still managed to become one of the first hip-hop groups inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his reply was quick and poignant.”Well, honestly, it’s insignificant if we don’t do s*** with it.” Inside Music & The Black Panther Party Facebook Poll: Vote For Your Favorite Rihanna Album Poll: Vote For Your Favorite Rihanna Album 25 GRAMMY Records Set By African-Americans Black History Month 25 GRAMMY Records Set By African-Americans Photos: WireImage.com Ledisi Email Have Hip-Hop And R&B Music Really Eclipsed Rock? Outside of soul music, the Black Panther Party’s reach extended to rock. The Grateful Dead and Santana played party benefit concerts. Frank Zappa and folk acts Crosby, Stills & Nash and Bob Dylan were among artists who also sang about the movement. While Dylan’s 1971 song “George Jackson” told the story of the Panther leader who was shot and killed while serving time in San Quentin Prison, it was his pre-Black Panther Party song “Ballad Of A Thin Man” that caught the attention of Newton, who is photographed holding the album cover of Dylan’s 1965 album, Highway 61 Revisited, on which the song appears.According to Seale, Newton repeatedly replayed the song as they worked on the first edition of The Black Panther newspaper. In his 1996 book, Seize The Time: The Story Of The Black Panther Party And Huey P. Newton, Seale recalled Newton’s interpretation of “Ballad Of A Thin Man,” saying that he believed Dylan used a circus freak as a metaphor for an impoverished black man, who serves as entertainment for the middle and upper-class white people. Newton stressed that the spectators were, in fact, the real freaks and felt strongly that the song was “saying a hell of a lot about society.”As the Black Panther Party approaches its 52nd anniversary this October, the legacy continues to live on through music. Beyoncé made headlines at the 60th GRAMMY Awards in January for her Black Panther-inspired ensemble, a long, sleek black dress topped off with a hat that resembled, a flatted, oversized beret. In 2016 the “Formation” singer celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party when she performed during Bruno Mars’ Super Bowl set with a sea of background dancers wearing all black and berets over their afros. Girl students told to stop showering washing clothes as taps run dry

first_imgDr. S. Radhakrishnan Bhavan, University of MysoreTwitter [Representational Image]A protest was staged at Mysore University after the administration told students staying at the girl’s hostel to stop showering and washing clothes due to water scarcity in the campus. A water tanker is provided to the hostel once a week for which the students have to stand in a long and exhausting queue. The taps in the campus have been running dry for almost three months leaving the students in a state of dilemma. The campus was once known for its self-sustainable water supply. The authorities said that water shortage is a result of constant power failure in the campus that has burned out the motor pump.Mysore University Vice-Chancellor G Hemantha Kumar said that he came to know about the water crisis only after the students staged a protest. He said that he has spoken to the students and promised a solution to the situation as soon as possible.”Since some of the borewells on the campus have dried up, we’ve spoken to the Mysore City Corporation to extend a waterline to the campus. Our request is kept pending because of the parliamentary elections,” he added, reports TOI.M Vasanthi, warden of Block 2 Hostel, confirmed that the water crisis was a result of frequent power cuts. “The matter is yet to be resolved. Otherwise, the hostel has no problems,” adds the report.According to reports, the campus had never opted for water from the civic administration as the university is located at the banks of Kukkarahalli lake. The campus has always depended on the 40 borewells inside the campus. Ten of them have totally dried up.last_img read more

What Constitutional Amendments Are On The Ballot

first_img Share Illustration by Todd WisemanThe Texas ConstitutionMonday marked the beginning of early voting for the Nov. 7 election. Texans are being asked to approve seven amendments to the state’s constitution.During legislative sessions, lawmakers typically agree on multiple changes to law that require amendments to the state’s rigid constitution.Any changes to the Texas Constitution must be approved by a majority of Texas voters. Getting a proposed amendment on the ballot requires support from more than two-thirds of both chambers of the Legislature.Voters in some communities are also weighing in on important local issues alongside the statewide ballot. For example, qualified Travis County voters will have the chance to vote for or against two bonds — one dealing with transportation improvements and another on constructing and improving county parks. In El Paso, voters will get the chance to approve or deny a $448.5 million bond measure that would build three new campuses and reconstruct a local high school. Check out VoteTexas.gov to find your polling place. Below are the seven constitutional amendments that will be on the ballot. The Texas Secretary of State’s office randomly assigned each resolution (each of which was adopted during the 2017 regular legislative session) a ballot number ahead of the election.Proposition 1What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the Legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of part of the market value of the residence homestead of a partially disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a partially disabled veteran if the residence homestead was donated to the disabled veteran by a charitable organization for less than the market value of the residence homestead and harmonizing certain related provisions of the Texas Constitution.”What it means: It would authorize property tax exemptions for certain partially disabled veterans or their surviving spouses — those whose homes were donated to them by charity for less than market value.Proposition 2What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment to establish a lower amount for expenses that can be charged to a borrower and removing certain financing expense limitations for a home equity loan, establishing certain authorized lenders to make a home equity loan, changing certain options for the refinancing for home equity loans, changing the threshold for an advance of a home equity line of credit, and allowing home equity loans on agricultural homesteads.”What it means: This would ease restrictions on borrowing against home equity in Texas and allow Texans easier access to their equity. The proposition also lowers the maximum fees that can be charged in connection with home equity loans but also exempts certain charges from the calculation of that maximum.Proposition 3What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment limiting the service of certain officeholders appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate after the expiration of the person’s term of office.”What it means: Unsalaried appointees whose terms have ended but who have not been replaced would serve only until the next legislative session has ended.Proposition 4What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the Legislature to require a court to provide notice to the attorney general of a challenge to the constitutionality of a state statute and authorizing the Legislature to prescribe a waiting period before the court may enter a judgment holding the statute unconstitutional.”What it means: This would require courts to notify the state attorney general of any constitutional challenges to state laws.Proposition 5What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment on professional sports teams’ charitable foundations conducting charitable raffles.”What it means: It would expand the definition of a “professional sports team,” giving more team-connected foundations the ability to hold charitable raffles.Proposition 6What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the Legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a first responder who is killed or fatally injured in the line of duty.”What it means: This would give property tax exemptions to surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty.Proposition 7What will be on the ballot: “The constitutional amendment relating to legislative authority to permit credit unions and other financial institutions to award prizes by lot to promote savings.”What it means: It would allow banks and other financial institutions to conduct promotional activities — such as raffles — to encourage savings.last_img read more

Christian Kurz Linear TV is still the dominant vie

first_imgChristian KurzLinear TV is still the dominant viewing source among those aged six to 34, with 69% of adults and 76% of kids still starting their viewing journey via TV channels, according to new research by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN).The TV RE[DEFINED] study claims that linear TV is still currently the only source that satisfies “both passive and active viewing needs” and, despite changing viewing habits, 71% still go to TV first, with the box remaining the main reference to discover and watch TV programs.Unveiling the research unveiled at Cable Congress in Brussels this morning, VIMN’s vice-president of research, insights and reporting, Christian Kurz, said that although the role of linear TV could still be challenged, “no online service is currently competing” with the viewing experience it provides. The research, which took a sample of 10,500 respondents aged 6-34 across 14 countries  – including the UK, Germany, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Poland, Brazil, Mexico and Australia – said that channel-surfing is still the primary discovery method used to find content by viewers today, followed by word-of-mouth and then TV ad spots and promos.“Online is very useful as a means of reinforcing interest, but it is linear TV that ‘seals the deal’ and commits them as viewers,” said that study. The research said that while VoD and subscription services are redefining TV, there is no dominant non-linear content source, with 56% of viewers in the previous week claiming to have accessed VoD, 53% channel sites, 51% DVR, and 47% SVoD.The research also said that for the majority of respondents, the defining part of TV Everywhere was the ability to watch ‘when’ they want – not ‘where’ or ‘how’.“This highlights the importance of user-friendly platforms to make it simple to watch their shows when the moment comes,” according to the research. The study said that the ability to access content in multiple ways only leads to higher engagement with TV if that content is compelling, with different devices simply vehicles for delivering content.“We have to not forget that TV promos are incredibly valuable,” said Kurz. “We have to not forget that EPGs and things like that are incredibly valuable and we have to keep innovating around those various pieces.”Kurz said that while TV is now a “two-way conversation,” that does not just mean social media – “our customer service centre phonelines are just as good a channel to listen to what people have to say as any others.”Referring to new ways of watching TV, Kurz said: “The expectation of the audience is that content is everywhere and all the time. So wherever we put rules and boundaries around that, we have to be really careful, because we do risk losing the audience. That goes for TV providers just as much as it goes for content creators.”“As a consumer I don’t understand exclusivity – I’m paying for it [content] so show it to me everywhere. That means that I want it on a TV operator catch-up app, but I also want it on the channel app, because it’s my choice as the consumer to decide where I want to go and how I want to watch it. That’s what as an industry we have to really deliver on.”In conclusion Kurz said: “In TV RE[DEFINED] the biggest step-change is not the devices or the sources – the biggest step-change is the engagement with content. It’s the relationship between the viewer and the maker, or the creator. It’s that two-way conversation and that is really redefining what television is today. It’s not TV on our terms anymore, it is TV on their terms and that really means that we can redefine our relationship to the viewer. But we have to actively do that and we have to actively engage with that.”last_img read more
