Hybrid wind-solar project in Minnesota may be perfect option for co-ops, municipalities

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Energy News Network:A trailblazing wind-solar hybrid project in western Minnesota could be a preview of what’s to come as renewable developers look for new ways to bolster projects. The project, developed and owned by Juhl Energy, is among the first of its kind in the country to pair wind and solar on the same site. A 2-megawatt turbine and 500-kilowatt solar installation share an inverter and grid connection, reducing equipment costs compared to two separate projects. The pairing is expected to start producing power this month. Lake Region Electric Cooperative in Pelican Rapids, about 30 miles north of Fergus Falls, will buy the power for its approximately 27,000 members.Juhl managing director Clay D. Norrbom said the plug-and-play nature of the system has attracted at least five other customers, including an industrial company in Iowa. Other customer prospects include cooperatives and municipally owned power providers in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. He predicts Juhl will build at least three this year.“It opens another market that quite frankly five, 10 or 15 years ago was not there,” Norrbom said. “You couldn’t supply to a municipal co-op. The scale and efficiency weren’t good enough to do that. Now you can go and supply at that distribution voltage something that’s price competitive to the end customers.”The hybrid offers an opportunity to increase capacity. Wind turbines operate at a 50 to 55 percent capacity, Norrbom said, while solar in the Midwest sits at 15 percent. By combining power from both sources, the hybrid reaches a capacity factor of 65 to 70 percent, Norrbom said, at a cost substantially less than what Lake Region pays for electricity from its transmission and generation provider Great River Energy. Juhl decided against adding storage due to cost and regulatory issues, both challenges he predicts will dissipate in the future.More: Wind-solar pairing cuts equipment costs while ramping up output Hybrid wind-solar project in Minnesota may be perfect option for co-ops, municipalitieslast_img read more

Kittle agrees to 5-year extension with 49ers: Source

first_imgLast Updated: 14th August, 2020 10:17 IST Kittle Agrees To 5-year Extension With 49ers: Source All-Pro tight end George Kittle agreed to a five-year, $75 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers that is the richest contract ever at the position All-Pro tight end George Kittle agreed to a five-year, $75 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers that is the richest contract ever at the position.A person familiar with the deal said the sides agreed Thursday on the deal to keep Kittle off the market next offseason. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract hadn’t been announced by the team.NFL Network first reported the terms and says the deal includes an $18 million signing bonus.“Kittle is Kittle. He’s a beast,” teammate Dee Ford said. “He’s the best blocking tight end, best catching tight end, best tight end in the league. So it’s always good competition going against him. I’m proud of him and he really deserves every penny.”Locking up Kittle was a high priority this offseason for the Niners and they were able to get it done two days before the first full team practice at training camp.Kittle had been one of the NFL’s biggest bargains after being drafted in the fifth round in 2017 and now he gets the biggest contract ever at the position. The previous high for annual value on a multiyear contract for a tight end, according to overthecap.com, was the $42 million, four-year deal Austin Hooper signed this offseason in Cleveland.Hunter Henry is playing this season for the Chargers on a $10.6 million franchise tag.The Niners could have used the tag on Kittle the next two offseasons, but instead managed to work out a long-term deal that satisfied both sides.“He’s earned it,” coach Kyle Shanahan told flagship radio station KNBR. “He does everything the right way. It starts with how talented and good you play on Sunday, which he does better than any tight end in the league. But after that, the way the guy takes care of himself. The way he works year-round to put his body in a position to stay healthy with the way he plays. It makes you believe in the guy.“It makes you believe in not what he has done, but what he’s going to do. When you have a guy like that, it makes it a lot easier for the owner to commit to him like that. We were just pumped to get it done because it’s something we all were dying to get something like that done with a player like George, and thankfully we did.”Kittle has been the most productive tight end in NFL history through his first three seasons with 197 catches for 2,664 yards. But he is almost equally as skilled as a blocker in the run game where he is a key piece in coach Kyle Shanahan’s dynamic offense. The Niners averaged 5.0 yards per carry last season with Kittle on the field, compared to 3.5 yards per carry without him, according to NFL NextGen stats. After a solid rookie season, Kittle broke through in 2018 when he set an NFL record for yards receiving in a season for tight ends when he had 88 catches for 1,377 yards and was named a second-team All-Pro.He was almost as productive last season despite missing two games with injuries when he had 85 catches for 1,053 yards and was a first—team All-Pro. He also was a major reason the Niners went 13-3 on the way to a Super Bowl appearance. It has been quite a start to a career for a player who caught only 48 passes in 25 college games at Iowa, leading him to fall to the fifth round of the draft. The Niners believed in his athleticism and potential and were surprised he lasted beyond the third round. But they were very fortunate he was there at 146th overall as the ninth tight end selected in that draft.NOTES: The 49ers also signed OL Spencer Long to a one-year deal. … The team waived DL Alex Barrett to make room on the roster.Image credits: AP SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENT FOLLOW US First Published: 14th August, 2020 10:16 ISTcenter_img Written By WATCH US LIVE LIVE TV Associated Press Television News last_img read more
