Never had any differences with Dhoni, we spent memorable times together: Gambhir

first_imgGautam Gambhir may have had differences in opinion with MS Dhoni on the field but the former India cricketer made it clear that he never had any personal problems with the legendary wicketkeeper off the field.A lot was said and written about the relationship between Gambhir and Dhoni when the former was leading the Indian team in all three formats. There were rumours that the two didn’t look eye-to-eye and were constantly at loggerheads with each other. In a recent interview with India Today, Gambhir even criticised Dhoni’s selection policies during the 2012 ODI tri-series in Australia. But whatever differences he had with Dhoni, they were all limited to the cricket field, the former Delhi batsman went on to add.”These are only rumours (rift with Dhoni). There are differences of opinion everywhere in families, teams as well. If everybody thinks alike then at some point or the other your growth will be hampered.”There were differences of opinion with Dhoni, I used to play cricket differently and I had different ideas. But when your vision and objective is the same, to help India win, then I don’t think we had any major differences. I didn’t have any problems with Dhoni, there weren’t any from my side,” Gambhir told India Today. The 37-year-old, who recently retired from all forms of cricket, said that he has spent some of the most memorable moments of his career with Dhoni in the dressing room and can never have any differences with the former skipper off the field.advertisement”I don’t think I will ever have any personal issues with him. Me and Dhoni have enjoyed some of the best moments of Indian cricket inside the dressing room.”We won the T20 World Cup (2007), we became the number one Test team, we won the 2011 World Cup, the CB Series, drew the South Africa Test series, won the Asia Cup.”We both have enjoyed these moments together in the dressing room. So I don’t think there will be any regrets or differences between me and Dhoni,” Gambhir added.Gambhir however, picked Anil Kumble as the best captain he has ever played under, even though he made his debut under Rahul Dravid and won two World Cups in Dhoni’s reign.”I have been asked which is the best captain I have played under and I have always said that the captain is as good as his team. Today I can say that I have played under a lot of captains, but there was only one leader and that was Anil Kumble. I think I have learned so much from him,” Gambhir said.”I have played only five Tests under him. I have learned a lot of my leadership skills from him. The way he was selfless and the way he was passionate… the way he was honest about his own cricket. I think I can say after I have retired that he was the best leader that I played under,” added the 2009 ICC Test player of the year. Also Read | It was a massive shock: Gambhir recalls Dhoni’s 2012 selection policy for Australia seriesAlso Read | Anil Kumble was the best leader that I played under: Gautam Gambhir to India TodayAlso Read | Ranji Trophy 2018: Gambhir scores farewell hundred, Rohera records highest first-class debut scoreAlso Read | Gautam Gambhir: Fiery, confrontational and generous philanthropistlast_img
