IPL 2016: Rahul Dravid to mentor Delhi Daredevils

first_imgFormer India captain Rahul Dravid will mentor the Delhi Daredevils for the ninth season of the Indian Premier League. Paddy Upton has been appointed coach.Dravid reportedly turned down an offer to coach the Daredevils after a long season with the India ‘A’ and the India U-19 teams. He returned home a couple of weeks ago from Bangladesh after guiding Ishan Kishan’s team to the under-19 World Cup final.The former batting star was a key figure in the Rajasthan Royals but he was up for grabs after the team was suspended for two years by the RM Lodha committee.Dravid, it is understood, was not keen on coaching the Daredevils as he wants to spend more time with the family.The Times of India reported last Monday that Dravid and some others from the Royals core group, helped put together Delhi Daredevils’ team this year. The likes of Karun Nair and Sanju Samson, who were contracted with the Royals till last year, were bought by the Daredevils in this auction.Rishabh Pant, Khaleel Ahmed and Mahipal Lomro, who were part of the India team for the Under-19 World Cup, are also in the Daredevils squad for IPL 2016.Dravid said he was excited with the prospect of working with Delhi Daredevils because they had brought together a young and impressive squad.”I’m excited to be working with Delhi Daredevils. They have assembled a young squad for the seasons ahead. I have always admired the way they have worked and I am looking forward to add to that group,” said the legendary batsman.  Delhi Daredevils had a disastrous season in 2015, winning only five out of 14 matches and finishing seventh out of eight teams.
