Softball Travels to Tampa fo USF Tournament

first_imgFordham (0-5) travels to Tampa in search of its first win of the season. Fordham opened 2018 with a challenging schedule, including three games against ranked teams. This will be the first all-time meeting between Drake and Fordham. Next week, Drake travels to Columbia, Mo. for the Mizzou Tournament, March 2-4. Drake will play five scheduled games with two against Creighton, two against Missouri (RV) and one versus Southeastern Louisiana. Print Friendly Version TAMPA, Fla. – The Drake University softball team continues its non-conference tournament schedule at the USF Tournament this weekend, Feb. 23-25, in Tampa, Fla. Drake (6-3) opens play in the Sunshine State Friday with a matchup against Bryant at 10:30 a.m. followed by a game against host, South Florida, at 3:15 p.m. The Bulldogs resume action Saturday morning against Fordham at 8:15 a.m. before playing two additional TBD games. The opponents and times will be determined by a reseeding based on the results of the earlier games. One game will take place Saturday afternoon with the finale scheduled for Sunday morning. Bryant, Drake, Fordham and South Florida are the four teams in the three-day tournament. Live Stats South Florida (5-7) and Drake will meet for the first time since 2010. Last week, South Florida dropped a doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast before competing in the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. She pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts to lift Drake to a 1-0 victory over Mississippi State. Newman followed that performance with five scoreless innings in the Bulldogs’ 4-0 win over South Alabama where she allowed just two hits and struck out seven with two walks. Redshirt junior pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) continues to make an impact in her return to the circle this season, earning her second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week honor on Monday. This season, Newman is 4-0, hasn’t allowed a run, struck out 33 batters and allowed just nine hits in 20.0 innings of work.last_img
