Helicopter crash kills student; one survives

first_imgCASTAIC – A helicopter crashed into a creek bed south of state Route 126 Saturday, killing a student pilot and injuring an instructor, county fire officials said. The two-seat Schweizer helicopter, operated by Van Nuys Airport-base Group 3 Aviation, clipped a power line, but it was not clear whether that caused the crash or if the helicopter cut the cable while coming down, officials said. “They do a lot of training out here,” Los Angeles County Fire Department battalion chief Joseph Lindaman said. “When you’re flying, (the wires) are hard to see. Helicopters often run into the wires.” It was not immediately known which of the helicopter’s occupants was piloting. The victims’ names were not immediately released, and the cause of the crash was under investigation.
