House committee approves Frye’s ‘Stop the Bleed’ bill

first_imgIndianapolis, In. — The House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee supported State Rep. Randy Frye’s (R-Greensburg) legislation that would place life-saving kits in public schools.“Throughout my years as a firefighter, I learned that every minute counts in emergency situations,” said Frye, chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. “After our own state experienced two school shootings last year, it has become vital we ensure schools have equipment immediately available to treat potentially life-threatening wounds. This is an important precaution to protect students and educators while they are at school.”According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, uncontrolled post-trauma bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death among trauma patients. “Stop the Bleed” is a nationwide initiative that provides first-aid kits to help in emergency situations. In an effort to save lives, Frye authored legislation that would place “Stop the Bleed” kits in public schools to be used in the rare event of an emergency. School personnel would be trained to use the kits, which consist of instructional documents, a tourniquet, bandages and other items.Frye said the kits would be mounted on a wall near AED’s, or automated external defibrillators.According to Frye, this is one of several pieces of legislation focused on improving school safety making its way through the legislative process.“Indiana has been highlighted as a national leader for implementing and investing in school safety policies,” Frye said. “My proposal is just one way lawmakers are working to keep students and educators safe in the event of a rare and unexpected school emergency.”House Bill 1063 now moves to the full House of Representatives for further consideration. Masters 2019: Tiger Woods begins chase for fifth green jacket

first_imgTiger Woods, met with a deafening roar of approval at his first-tee introduction Thursday morning at the Masters, opened with a perfect drive to draw an even bigger response as he began the 2019 tournament on an Augusta National course, where he has thrilled fans for more than two decades.Seeking his fifth Masters title, his first since 2005, Woods teed off at 11:04 a.m. ET in a grouping with Haotong Li and Jon Rahm. Masters 2019: Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus get tournament underway “It proved to me that I could win again,” Woods said earlier in the week. That’s quite a difference from 2018, when Woods’ arrival at Augusta National was met with as much curiosity as fanfare in his return to the tournament coming off spinal fusion surgery. He finished tied for 30th last year at 6-under.This year? He clearly thinks his game is in shape to not only still compete with a young generation of golfers who weren’t around when he last one the Masters, but beat them, too, for a 15th major title that he has been waiting more than 10 years to get.”I would not have foreseen that for sure,” Woods said earlier this week. “After I won my 14th, I felt like I still had plenty of more major championships that I could win, unfortunately I just didn’t do it, I put myself there with chances on the back nine with various places, I just haven’t won. On the opening 445-yard par 4, Woods followed his drive with an iron to the middle of a receptive green on a hole that hasn’t been kind to him (he is 16-over par in his career on No. 1, known as “Tea Olive”). Woods two-putted from there for a tidy par and a steady start to the round.Playing in his second consecutive Masters after experiencing a litany of personal and physical problems, Woods arrived at the year’s first major with renewed confidence born out of his victory in the Tour Championship last fall. Buttigieg stops in Mason City

first_imgMASON CITY — Former South Bend Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg made four stops throughout Iowa on Wednesday, including last night in Mason City, one day after the final Democratic presidential candidate debate before the Iowa Caucuses.Buttigieg says the next president needs to be able to rally Americans to get things done. “We’re going to need a president determined to rise to meet those big issues and one with a plan on how to do that in a way that will actually have America more united and not divided from before. That tall order, that big job, that is what I believe the presidency is for. I’m asking for your support, and I’m running for this office, because I believe the presidency has a purpose. The purpose of the presidency is not to glorify the president, it is to empower and unify the American people to get those big things done, that’s why I’m running.”Buttigieg says the next president has to unify and not divide Americans.  “My sense of patriotism, my love of country begins with the understanding that our country consists of people. You can’t love a country if you hate half of the people in it. We have to do better than that. We have to make sure that we lift one another up, protect one another, and if we’re serious about protecting each other, that starts right here at home.”Buttigieg says those currently serving in the military deserve a better Commander in Chief. “Those troops deserve a president who carefully reads all of the intelligence that is submitted on important decisions, who consults with Congress on major issues of life and death, war and peace, who is in touch with our allies on whose cooperation or safety often depends, and who think through the consequences and the moves and the counter-moves that could follow from any decision that’s made in the situation room. Does anybody think that’s what this president is doing when it comes time to make those decisions?”Buttigieg says people are being underpaid and it’s hurting the economy. “The bottom line is that most people are struggling right now to hold on to what they’ve got, let alone to get ahead, which is supposed to be that American dream. In order to do something about that, we’ve got to face the fact that not only are there very complicated, very sophisticated things happening in the economy, there’s some really simple problems, extremely simple problems like this one. People are not getting paid enough. To me that’s the number one problem in the economy, and that’s what we’ve got to fix, and we can do it by supporting workers as well as making things more affordable on the other end.”Besides stops yesterday in Newton, Tama, and Cedar Falls, Buttigieg will be at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona this morning at 10:30 before traveling later today to Emmetsburg, Arnolds Park, Orange City and Sioux City.last_img read more

O’DONNELL INSPIRES TERMON LADIES TO REACH ULSTER FINAL

first_imgBrynsford Co Down 1–8 Termon 5–5Maureen O’Donnell turned in a five star display to push Termon over the line in a bruising encounter at Brynsford last night. This was a game that had everything, three sending offs, terrific play, great goals and a backdrop of the Mourne mountains that hung like a post card setting to the town end of the Brynsford grounds.Termon got off to the perfect start when Eimer Gallagher fed Geraldine Mc Laughlin for a point from the throw-in. Maureen O Donnell was in the thick of the action in the opening minutes and this fact was noted by the Brynsford defence.O’Donnell was the subject of close attention and it was no surprise that Brynsford Claren Owens was sin binned after five minutes for a dangerous tackle on O Donnell.Termon who went in at the break 2–4 1–5 ahead courtesy of 1–2 from Geraldine Mc Laughlin and a goal and a point from o Donnell, with Roisin Friel completing the first half scoring. On the resumption o Donnell opened Termons account with a point. Play swung from end to end before Dara Kelly rejoined proceedings as her ten minutes sin binning had overlapped halftime. Kelly’s worth was very evident to Termon as she was just on the field of play and she had scored a goal. Better was to come as moments later she put the icing on the cake with a second super strike.O Donnell added a second individual goal and a last minute point to send Termon in the Ulster final against old rival Donaghmoyne the Monaghan champions next Sunday. This was a game that the backline as a unit from Laura Gallagher out won for Termon. All be it Roisin Mc Cafferty after a shaky start combined with Emer Gallagher to curb Brynsford midfield partnership of Clara Fitzpatrick and Sinead Murphy. These two are the current Down midfieders. In the forward line Geraldine McLaughlin, Aisling Ryan and sweeper Marie Carr shone. Roisin Friel in the opening period kept Termon in this game while Dara Kelly showed what a powerful performer she can be.
