FDA approves levofloxacin for anthrax in children

first_imgMay 20, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently offered another antibiotic option for combating inhalational anthrax in children by approving the quinolone drug levofloxacin (Levaquin). In a letter dated May 5, the FDA endorsed the use of levofloxacin, made by Ortho-McNeil, in children 6 months of age and older. The agency had approved use of the drug for postexposure treatment of anthrax in adults in 2004.Levofloxacin is also used in adults to treat pneumonia, bacterial sinusitis and bronchitis, and complicated skin and urinary tract infections, according to the FDA. It is not approved for children for anything but anthrax. The first-line treatments for anthrax in both children and adults are ciprofloxacin and doxycycline, according to a report by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) experts in the April issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases. The report was based on a 2006 conference on public health and clinical guidelines for anthrax. The article says that because safety data on use longer than 28 days are lacking, levofloxacin is recommended as a second-line postexposure drug for adults, “to be reserved for instances where medical issues may call for its use.” The report lists amoxicillin as a second-line treatment for children, provided the anthrax strain involved is susceptible to penicillin.Clinical trials have shown an increased incidence of musculoskeletal adverse events, such as joint pain, arthritis, and tendonopathy, in children treated with levofloxacin, according to the FDA approval letter. One study, which compared the medication with a non-quinolone antibiotic, showed musculoskeletal problems were significantly more common in the levofloxacin group, but none were serious, and they resolved in about a week. The FDA letter says the recommended levofloxacin dosages for children are based on body weight: 500 milligrams (mg) once daily for those weighing more than 50 kilograms (kg) (110 pounds), 8 mg per kg every 12 hours for those weighing less.See also: Stern EJ, Uhde KB, Shadomy SV, et al. Moyes men frustrate Gunners

first_imgArsenal were denied a return to top spot in the Barclays Premier League after Manchester United battled to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium. Chances were at a premium between the two sides, with the best coming in the opening minutes as former Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, now in the United camp, and home striker Olivier Giroud should both have scored. Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny pushed a bullet header from the Holland forward against the crossbar in the second half of a match which ultimately failed to live up to its billing, leaving Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea still top of the league. Press Association Arsenal were looking to return to the top of the table following Chelsea’s draw at West Brom, and boss Arsene Wenger made two changes in the wake of the 5-1 mauling at Liverpool, with Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs starting. Wenger’s men had been caught sleeping by Liverpool’s fast start on Saturday, and they were almost behind within the opening minute again, as they were at Anfield, when Arteta gave the ball away on the edge of the penalty area. However, Van Persie, so prolific in the season before he left the Emirates Stadium, scuffed his shot and Szczesny got down to save. Arsenal then went on the offensive, with a goal-bound shot from Jack Wilshere blocked before Giroud headed wide from five yards following the resulting corner. A 20-yard strike from Rosicky spiralled up off the back of United captain Nemanja Vidic, who is set to leave at the end of the season, and almost wrong-footed goalkeeper David De Gea. Van Persie beat the offside trap after 17 minutes down the left channel, but then made a complete hash of his cross, which flew through the penalty area and out of play on the far side. The tempo of the match dropped before Giroud cracked a 20-yard effort high and wide following a good spell of Arsenal pressure. There was a brief stoppage when home left-back Gibbs needed treatment following a heavy fall after making a header in the United box – which left Red Devils manager Moyes fuming after play was correctly called back by referee Mark Clattenburg. United’s Brazilian full-back Rafael then also had to be treated after coming off worse in a 50/50 challenge with Giroud. Cazorla crashed a 20-yard shot into the back of Wilshere as the first half fizzled out. United were forced into a change at the start of the second half as struggling Rafael was replaced by Rio Ferdinand, who made his first Premier League appearance since November. Having been frustrated by United’s determined midfield display, Arsenal almost snatched the lead after 61 minutes when Valencia’s headed clearance under the crossbar thwarted Koscielny. Szczesny was then quick off his line to head clear as Van Persie closed in on the Arsenal penalty area. Both sides made a change as the match entered the final 15 minutes, as United replaced Juan Mata with Adnan Januzaj and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on for Rosicky. Arsenal were close again when Sagna’s right-wing cross was just ahead of Giroud as he raced in at the near post. With 10 minutes left, Van Persie could have won it when he met a floated cross from Rooney at the far post with his powerful header, from which Szczesny produced his heroics. There was time for De Gea and Cazorla to have their personal battle in the late stages, but neither side had really done enough to earn victory. David Moyes’ visitors were almost gifted a lead inside the first minute when Mikel Arteta gave the ball away to Van Persie, but the one-time Arsenal skipper saw his scuffed shot saved. French forward Giroud headed an Arsenal corner wide from inside the six-yard box in what was an electric start. However, the tempo of the match then dropped, with only a deflected effort from Tomas Rosicky causing United goalkeeper David De Gea some concern during the lull. United – looking to make up ground on the top four following their 2-2 draw at home with Fulham – continued to frustrate Arsenal with a determined midfield display, closing down space quickly when not on the ball. When Arsenal did get into second gear as the hour passed, Antonio Valencia cleared a header off the line from Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny. Giroud just could not get on the end of a great cross from right-back Bacary Sagna before, at the other end, Szczesny tipped a bullet header from Van Persie against the frame of the goal. De Gea twice saved from Santi Cazorla during the closing stages as Arsenal pressed for a winner, but each team had to be content with a point. United made two changes following the disappointment of the Fulham result, as Tom Cleverley and Valencia came in, while midfielder Marouane Fellaini was on the bench following a long lay-off with a groin problem. last_img read more

Badgers claw past Owls in blowout win

first_imgDEREK MONTGOMERY/Herald photoJohn Stocco and Owen Daniels are pretty close.Since their days as backup quarterbacks behind Brooks Bollinger and Jim Sorgi, Stocco and Daniels have spent a good amount of time together both on and off the field. Daniels, now a tight end, serves as one of Stocco’s biggest supporters as well as a security blanket of sorts on the turf.”It’s supposed to help,” Daniels laughed, this past spring, when asked if their friendship helped him get a few more chances during games. But, all joking aside, in Wisconsin’s 65-0 defeat of Temple Saturday, that relationship paid huge dividends for the duo. With Temple trusting the job of covering Daniels to its linebacker corps, the senior slashed through the Owl defense, setting career marks with six catches for 88 yards and three touchdowns.”Many times they were trying to run with a linebacker on [Daniels], which is very difficult if you’re asking a linebacker to play run support and also play the tight end, so we felt we could take advantage of that,” head coach Barry Alvarez said. “Owen did a nice job of running after he caught the ball.”Temple’s inability to adjust to the Wisconsin offense was also a key to Daniels’ success. After scoring his first touchdown to give Wisconsin a 10-0 lead on a bench route, UW ran a small variation of the same play on Daniels’ next scoring opportunity, an 11-yard pass from Stocco that put the Badgers up 24-0.”Obviously I like having OD (Owen Daniels) out there,” Stocco said. “He is a heck of a player for us. A couple of the routes we ran we knew were going to be open and they happened to be in the red zone.”Though he only played just under two quarters, Stocco set a career mark of his own with his three touchdown passes to Daniels, the most of his career. For the game, Stocco finished 12-for-19 with 180 yards.”John has practiced very well,” Alvarez said. “He has thrown the ball extremely well in practice. You always like to see it carried over into the game and that’s exactly what I saw today and what I was expecting to see.”Stocco’s day ended after his third touchdown toss to Daniels gave the Badgers a 37-0 advantage with 6:32 left in the first half, giving backup Tyler Donovan a chance to see the most extensive game experience of his career.”It’s been a while since I have been out there really competing in a game and managing a game and it felt good to get back out there,” Donovan said.Though he only attempted six passes in the game, Donovan made the most of his opportunity. The sophomore rushed for 32 yards, including one touchdown, as well as completing three passes for 49 yards. The sophomore signal caller also tossed the first touchdown pass of his UW career, a 29-yard strike to wide receiver Marcus Randle El with just 14 seconds remaining in the first half to give UW a 51-0 advantage.”I loved it,” Donovan said. “It was a good route to Marcus Randle El and he just had the speed. It was a rush to have my first college career touchdown pass at Wisconsin.”Though the play may have been viewed as Wisconsin running up the score, Temple’s head coach Bobby Wallace wasn’t upset by the play call at all.”I was not mad at all, that didn’t bother me one bit,” Wallace said. “I was in a game where we were up 42-0 at half, then ended up winning 49-42, so only being halftime, there was nothing wrong with what they did. Halftime is way too early for you to stop thinking about scoring.””Barry Alvarez showed a lot of class playing all his guys in the third and fourth quarters,” Wallace added. After allowing 42 points against Bowling Green and enduring a week full of criticism, Wisconsin’s defense responded to the challenge Saturday, shutting out the Owls. It was Wisconsin’s first shutout since 1999, when UW blanked Indiana 59-0.”I think we did improve. It felt good to shut their team out and it helped our confidence,” defensive back Brett Bell said. “To allow zero points is hard, even last year when we had one of the best defenses in the country we didn’t get a shut out. It’s a hard thing to do.”Yet the Badgers are once again on guard against a letdown with their first road trip of the season on the horizon following the impressive victory over a weaker Owl team.”We’ve got to keep going, got to stay consistent, and we know North Carolina will come with a better team than we’ve seen the past two weeks, so we’ve got to keep preparing and get ready for the next game,” Daniels said.last_img read more
