Mondi expands Russian business

first_img10 December 2007South African-based paper producer Mondi is expanding its international presence following its listing on the JSE at the beginning of the month, announcing a €525-million (about R5.1-billion) project to modernise and expand its pulp and paper mill in Syktyvkar, Russia.“All main equipment contracts have been agreed and construction is to commence in April 2008, with completion scheduled by the end of 2010,” the company said in a statement last week. “The project will enhance Syktyvkar’s low-cost position, with the additional volume of uncoated fine paper and containerboard being supplied to the high-growth domestic Russian market.”Engineering News reported last month that the project involved the construction of new wood-handling facilities, a recovery boiler and turbine, a lime kiln and pulp dryer, as well as upgrades to two chemical pulp lines and improvements to machinery.Mondi chief executive David Hathorn told Engineering News that the project should slash operating costs and improve efficiencies, while also slightly increasing production by 190 000 tonnes per year, 60 000 tonnes of which will be sold into the pulp market, which is being driven by Chinese demand. He added that the modernisation of the plant was probably only the start of the group’s activities in the territory, which is arguably the only major unexploited softwood resource left in the world.“In fact, forests cover more than 70% of the territory, while swamps cover about 15%, making forestry activity attractive but difficult, given swarming mosquitoes and mud in the warmer periods,” Engineering News said. “This means that felling is generally confined to the icy winter months.”The company was spun-off from former parent Anglo American plc in July this year, and has looked at expansion to secure its position as an independent integrated paper and packaging group. Its main interests are in emerging markets, such as South Africa and in various locations in Eastern Europe.According to Mondi, Mondi Business Paper Syktyvkar, with an annual capacity of 580 000 tonnes of paper per year, is one of the largest producers in the Russian pulp and paper industry. In addition, the Syktyvkar mill controls 11 logging companies in the Komi Republic that supply the mill with wood.Mondi Packaging Paper, which operates within the same complex, has an annual capacity of more than 200 000 tonnes of packaging paper, delivering around 60% of the total white top paper market in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.SAinfo reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

South African referee honoured by IRB

first_img19 June 2012Paul Dobson was presented with the IRB Referee Award for Distinguished Service 2012 by IRB Council Member and South African Rugby Union CEO Jurie Roux at the IRB Junior World Championship semi-finals in Cape Town on Sunday. In a life devoted to rugby, not just as a referee, but also as a schools coach and writer, Dobson has made an exceptional contribution to the game in South Africa since taking the whistle of his first match in 1955, while a student in Pietermaritzburg. He joined the Western Province Referees Society in 1968 and took charge of more than 40 first class matches, becoming renowned for his authoritative, knowledgeable and fair style.“The IRB Referee Award for Distinguished Service recognises those who have contributed significantly to the area of officiating and there are few who have given more to referee development in South Africa than Paul Dobson. His contribution to the game over five decades as a referee, referee administrator and schools’ coach has changed the landscape of refereeing in the nation,” said Roux.‘An icon of refereeing in South Africa“He is an icon of refereeing in South Africa and is the mentor of guys like Andre Watson and other leading South African referees.”One of Dobson’s lasting legacies was his drive to unify the two different referees’ societies in South Africa, representing the then different Unions. By the end of 1991, Dobson had successfully navigated the merger and the referees were the first rugby body to achieve this, a year ahead of the unions becoming joined.“It’s always nice when your own people recognise you,” said Dobson after receiving the award. “But, they didn’t have to do it.“Dr Danie Craven said, ‘If you love something you never have to make sacrifices’, so I’ve never made sacrifices or felt I was serving. I loved doing it. I loved being with referees, I loved the whole business of refereeing and I’ve been one since 1968.‘I’ve enjoyed it tremendously’“It’s the friendship of it, being part of rugby football in a very special way. I’ve met marvellous people from all over the world and that’s been great. I’ve enjoyed it enormously,” he added.Dobson became chairman of the Western Province Society in 1985 and managed all aspects of refereeing in the region until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Western Province Rugby Council for 15 years. He is now a life member and honorary life president of the Western Province Rugby Referees’ Society.Dobson has, in recent years, turned his hand to rugby writing and his books on the game include: The Official History of South African Rugby, Doc: An Autobiography of Danie Craven and biographies on Nick Mallett and Andre Watson. He also manages content for the South African Rugby Union Referees’ website. His career as a school master saw him become South Africa’s youngest headmaster when he was appointed to the role at St Charles aged just 25. He joined the Bishops’ staff as a Latin teacher and during his 27 years on the staff he coached the under 15s and 16s.IRB AwardsThe IRB Referee Award for Distinguished Service is the second of the IRB Awards to be presented in 2012.In May, New Zealand’s playmaker Tomasi Cama was named IRB Sevens Player of the Year, in association with HSBC. State of the Nation Address 2015: an overview

first_imgPresident Jacob Zuma will deliver his sixth State of the Nation Address during a joint sitting of Parliament in Cape Town this evening. More than just a speech, Sona sets the agenda for how the country will be governed over the year ahead, making commitments to the nation that Parliament is obliged to ensure the government keeps. The State of the Nation Address is one of the rare occasions where the three arms of state, the executive (government), the legislature (Parliament) and the judiciary (the courts) gather in one place. (Image: Department of Communications)• Infographic: The State of the Nation, in numbers• State of the Nation Address 2014 • Behind the scenes: State of the Nation Address 2014 • In pictures: State of the Nation Address 2014 • In pictures: State of the Nation Address, June 2014 What is the State of the Nation Address? The State of the Nation Address is a speech to the nation by the president of the Republic of South Africa as head of state. It is delivered at the annual opening of Parliament to a joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. In the State of the Nation Address, the president sets out the government’s key policy objectives and deliverables for the year ahead, setting out the basis for executive action during the calendar.Since the opening of the first democratic Parliament in 1994, the tone of the State of the Nation Address has been inclusive, joyful and informal. The opening of Parliament has become an opportunity to showcase the country’s cultural diversity and a chance for ordinary citizens, especially children, to become part of this nationally important day.It is one of the rare occasions where the three arms of state, the executive (government), the legislature (Parliament) and the judiciary (the courts) gather in one place. The executive is represented by the president, deputy president and ministers. The other spheres of government are represented by provincial premiers and local government officials. The judiciary is represented by the country’s chief justice and the judge presidents. The legislature is represented by the presiding officers and members of Parliament.Members of the public are also invited to attend the State of the Nation Address and take part in the occasion as the civilian guard. Why is the State of the Nation Address important? The address is the yearly occasion when the president sets out government’s key policy objectives and deliverables for the year ahead. It lays the foundation for executive action. In the address, the President highlights the achievements and problems of the past year and maps the year ahead and beyond. The State of the Nation Address also focuses on the government’s programme of action for the future. The address covers wide-ranging political, economic and social matters and considers the general state of South Africa. It explores South Africa’s domestic affairs as well as its continental and international relations. The State of the Nation Address is an important way for the government to account to Parliament and South African citizens for what has happened over the past year, and to inform and involve the public in the political agenda of the coming year. What is the link between the State of the Nation Address and the oversight function of Parliament?Oversight is a function granted to Parliament in terms of the Constitution – chapter 4, section 55 – to monitor and oversee government actions at national, provincial and local level. The State of the Nation Address is one of the benchmarks against which Parliament holds government accountable to the people for what it delivers on and how the allocated budget is spent.Since the President sets out the government’s programme of action for the coming year, the address provides Parliament with a yardstick against which to measure government’s performance. When performing its oversight function, Parliament focuses on how laws are implemented, how budgets have been applied, whether government departments are being effectively managed, and whether government has done what it said it would do.The State of the Nation Address and the BudgetThe State of the Nation Address precedes the Budget Speech of the minister of finance. The Budget is therefore in line with the priorities outlined in the president’s speech.Towards the end of February, the minister of finance introduces the Budget for the coming year. The budgets of government departments are allocated according to the priorities set out in the State of the Nation Address. The Budget is a significant tool of oversight, holding the government accountable for how public funds are spent.Fast factsThe 2015 State of the Nation Address will begin at 19h00 on Thursday 12 February 2015. It will be broadcast live on national television and radio. A live stream via YouTube will also be available. The State of the Nation Address is broken down into three parts. The first is public participation when the civilian guard of honour welcomes the president and his guests as they walk along the red carpet. This is followed by a state ceremony which includes a 21-gun salute and Air Force flypast. Finally, the president delivers his address to Parliament.Members of the South African National Defence Force line the route that the President takes to Parliament. The military guard of honour also participates in the ceremony and the military band plays South Africa’s national anthem.last_img read more

Musical Memes, Choosing A Netizen Anthem

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts Celebrated Amateurs: Tay Zonday’s “Chocolate Rain” first became viral via 4Chan and has since landed the mahogany-voiced baritone features on Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live, a spot on Lily Allen’s Freeloader Nation Tour, and several endorsement deals. Also an overnight sensation, Gary Brolsma or “the Numa Numa Guy” is best known for his animated YouTube lipsync to Moldovan band O-Zone’s “Dragostea din tei.” Brolsma has since been featured in a South Park episode and videos for the Bare Naked Ladies and Weezer. While neither of these songs make strong direct political or social statements, the fact that they are so widely embraced, is a testament to the web’s spirit of playfulness. There are a number of perfectly worthy anthems for the wired generation. Kraftwerk’s Computer Love might suffice, or the Ataris’ Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start captures the essence of devoted Konami Contra fans. But a real anthem rallies a movement. It’s the kind of song that is not only widely accepted, but it inspires people to change their lives and behaviors. The hippies have Blowin’ in the Wind, the children of disco have Stayin’ Alive and the GLBT community has I’m Coming Out. But what do modern day netizens consider their anthem? What gets us grooving in our guilds, cranking out our code and soldering up a mean arduino? Below are some of the top musical memes and anthems from recent years. If you got suggestions for a netizen anthem, leave them in the comments below. Love and Longing – Code Monkey: While Jonathan Coulton is perhaps one of the greatest geek anthem musicians with songs like Re Your Brains and That Spells DNA, Code Monkey still manages to top the list with its universal themes of a struggling underdog and unrequited geek love. The song actually became the theme for G4’s now defunct Code Monkeys TV series. It also spurred a number of YouTube mash ups including Mike Booth’s World of Warcraft machinima video. Pursuit of Knowledge – Free Software Song: Richard Stallman is best known as the founder of the GNU Project and father of the Free Software Foundation. A truly brilliant developer, Stallman has been writing folk songs about technology for more than a decade. His Free Software song based on Bulgarian “Sadi Moma” helped define the musical genre of “filking” – a type of folk music generally created by science fiction & fantasy fans. The song is a tribute to free culture and copyleft software licensing. Bootstrapped Success – Crank That Soulja Boy: In early 2007, DeAndre Ramone Way, also known as Soulja Boy, was a little known rap artist with a number of tracks released on YouTube and music community SoundClick. Thanks to his Crank That Soulja Boy hit, by 2009 Way was a Grammy Award nominated artist with a record deal and his own production company. According to a Yahoo’s Music blog post from May 2009, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” has sold over 4,183,000 digital downloads in the United States, becoming the third highest-selling song ever. The song became an internet sensation after the dance tutorial video received more than 40 million YouTube views. Thousands of new videos have since been uploaded to YouTube in tribute to this anthem of a bootstrapped star. Resurrected Oldies: A number of songs written by music superstars have since become geek anthems. Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up was resurrected after 20 years when the act of tricking individuals into listening to the song or Rickrolling became a popular meme. The Astley meme became so widespread that Astley himself Rickrolled the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving parade in 2008. Meanwhile, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” although always a popular rock ballad, got it’s first taste at video meme-dom in a “Team Cyprus” video that was wildly criticized as an ostentatious display of wealth during one of the country’s worst economic slumps in history. The song has since been featured in an a cappella version on the season premiere of Glee. The squeaky-clean Glee version debuted at number four on the Billboard charts. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Lists#web dana oshirolast_img read more

How to Keep Company Data Safe on Employees’ Personal Devices

first_imgjohn paul titlow Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#Analysis#biz Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Once upon a time, the only computers people used at work were those paid for, owned and managed by the company and its IT department. One wouldn’t even think of lugging in their home PC to use in the office. Why would they? Even as laptops came into prominence, the few employees that both owned laptops and needed to use them for work purposes had to go through the IT department to have a VPN client and security software installed.Today, things are quite different. As smart phones continue to get faster and cheaper, more and more employees are walking around with tiny, yet very powerful computers in their pockets. And while many businesses give out and administer smart phones for employee use, in most cases, these are personal devices. This presents unique challenges and considerations for company IT departments. As an example, I bought an iPhone for personal use three years ago. I loaded it with news apps, music, personal finance apps and personal notes and have been adding more and more of my own data and applications to it as time goes on. But I also use it for work at my day job. The minute I put in my company’s email server credentials into Mail, I transformed the device into a strictly personal one to one that has access to some pretty sensitive company data. I also keep meeting notes in Google Docs (synced between the desktop, iPhone and now my iPad) and share files with colleagues in Dropbox. If my iPhone were ever stolen or lost, all of that corporate data would suddenly be vulnerable, unless I have the necessary security measures in place. With so many employees accessing corporate data from personal devices, how can IT departments properly manage the security of these devices without being too heavy-handed? This is precisely the question that Forrester seeks to answer in one of their latest reports on mobile security. In it, they examine some of the biggest potential security risks that come with the proliferation of personal devices in the workplace, as well as what companies can do to alleviate those risks. A Few Commonsense Security MeasuresThere are many obvious advantages that come with the portability of these devices, but one of the drawbacks is that they can easily left behind in a cab or stolen. Simple steps like password-protecting phones and enabling remote locking and wiping of the device can go a long way in keeping company data safe. Another issue is malware, especially as Android grows in popularity. Whenever possible and appropriate, anti-malware software should be deployed on any device that accesses company networks or data. Forrester recommends some basic regulations that should be included in any corporate mobile security policy. Among them:The IT department should be allowed to manage any device that has access to company networks and data. This should, of course, be done while still respecting the user’s privacy. The company’s usual Web usage policies should apply to personal devices, as long as they’re being used at work. The company’s IT department should be able to monitor usage while the device is being used on the company’s network or premises. They should also have the freedom to restrict access to corporate data if necessary. If the device is stolen or the employee leaves the company, the IT department should be able to wipe company data from it remotely. For more sensitive industries and government agencies, Forrester recommends far more restrictive measures, such as limiting the applications employees can use to access company data. Does your company have a policy in place to deal with the security of personal devices in the workplace? Let us know in the comments.center_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Quebec agriculture minister says he was wrong to endorse firing of whistleblower

first_imgMONTREAL — Quebec’s agriculture minister says he went too far when he endorsed the firing of a whistleblowing bureaucrat who had raised concerns about pesticide use.Last week, Andre Lamontagne said he personally approved the dismissal of department agronomist Louis Robert for transmitting a confidential document to a journalist. The minister told reporters this morning he had misspoken and the firing was an administrative decision. He said he has asked the Quebec ombudsman to investigate the case.Robert, a seed expert, spoke out last year against what he said was private-sector interference in a public study on pesticide use. He was fired Jan. 24.Quebec’s whistleblower law protects employees who disclose information within their department. But disclosure to the public is protected only if the employee believes there is a serious risk to health, safety or the environment.Robert’s union has vowed to contest his firing, saying it was unprecedented for a minister to intervene in the dismissal of an employee five levels below him in the bureaucratic hierarchy. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Ohio State softball wins 4 games before dropping final one in USC

OSU then-freshman pitcher Shelby Hursh (19) throws a pitch during a game against Northwestern on April 28, 2014. Credit: Courtesy of OSUThe Buckeyes are still looking for a weekend without experiencing defeat. This weekend in South Carolina, the Ohio State softball team (9-3) came a game away from an unblemished weekend but were defeated in their final game against South Carolina Upstate (11-2).Three Buckeyes combined for five home runs over the weekend, three of which came from junior Alex Bayne. The outfielder now has 11 RBIs on the year, which is only two short of her 2015 total. The tournament marked the first of 2016 in which all five OSU pitchers saw action, which allowed the team to maintain its stamina throughout the weekend. Junior Shelby Hursh now has 44 strikeouts this season, and the staff’s combined ERA is a mere 1.88.Game 1OSU started strong in another weekend opener with a 13-0 shutout against Virginia Tech (4-10) on Friday. The Hokies only delivered one hit, a double by redshirt senior catcher Katey Smith, and momentum remained on the Buckeyes’ side. All of OSU’s runs were earned, and five Buckeyes contributed multiple hits. Bayne and sophomore center fielder Taylor White both had three RBIs, but sophomore pitcher Shelby McCombs led the squad with four RBIs while going 2-for-3.McCombs, who played as the game’s designated hitter, delivered a stellar performance offensively last weekend in Atlanta, including a walk-off home run in OSU’s first matchup against Georgia Tech. McCombs got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard first with a one-out, two-run single after senior shortstop Maddy McIntyre ignited the offense with a leadoff single in the first inning. White hit a single to left field to make the game 3-0.OSU ballooned its lead to 10 in the second inning after a handful of wild pitches by Hokies senior Maggie Tyler advanced runners into scoring position. Bayne, White and senior catcher Cammi Prantl contributed two-run singles, and junior second baseman Anna Kirk recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly.The Buckeyes did not become complacent though. Bayne and McCombs teamed up to deliver two home runs in the third inning and three more RBIs. Bayne now has six homers on the year, while McCombs has two. From the mound, Hursh struck out three in her two innings pitched. The Buckeyes’ comfortable lead over the Hokies allowed freshman Katya Duvall to make her debut for the team, in which she also struck out three and earned the win.Game 2OSU continued an unstoppable Friday outing, beating Furman (7-9) in the second game of the doubleheader. Building upon a strong offense against the Hokies, seven Buckeyes, led by Bayne, contributed RBIs in the team’s 15-3 win.Bayne added two home runs, one in the top of the first inning and one in the sixth. The left fielder’s bat seemed to inspire the rest of the Scarlet and Gray because the team combined for nine multiple-base hits. Prantl and sophomore Becca Gavin each hit one over the fence, and Prantl continued her streak, going 4-for-4.These key hits provided OSU with a 7-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, after the Paladins took advantage of passed balls and a throwing error by the Buckeye defense in the sixth. Furman sophomore third baseman Brittany Houston had a two-run single to center field against freshman Morgan Ray, who had just stepped onto the mound to relieve McCombs. The Buckeyes responded loudly in the top of the seventh and added eight more runs to solidify their win. Five of these runs were scored with two outs as the Paladins began to run out of steam. Senior first baseman Erika Leonard, senior pinch hitter Jayla Saibene and freshman second baseman Emily Clark all gave the Buckeyes a final push at the plate.Defensively, OSU made plays that kept the Paladins from scoring or even stringing hits together. In the bottom of the third, the infield cleared the bases with a double play. In the following inning, McCombs, who got the win in the matchup, hit two batters but was able to strike out two more to get out of the situation.Like McCombs, Furman sophomore Lindsey Bert also hit two batters, but her effort on the mound, along with that of senior Alex Sappington, could not trip up the Scarlet and Gray as they moved to an undefeated Friday.Game 3The Buckeyes got off to another quick start Saturday with a comfortable 9-1 win against Morehead State (5-6). Junior Lena Springer got her first chance of the weekend on the mound and her first complete game of the season.Like its two previous matchups in South Carolina, OSU got on the board first with Leonard’s RBI groundout. The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Prantl singled up the middle, which was followed by two throwing errors by the Eagles.OSU left runners on base in all six innings but still managed to chip away at Morehead State’s defense and pitchers, sophomore Mackenzie Grossmann and junior Megan Tymorek. The Buckeyes left the bases loaded in the third inning but returned in the fourth to score another run on a triple to right field by McIntyre. The Eagles did not score until the final inning with an unearned run on senior first baseman Dana Hutchins’ double. Morehead State, which went winless over the weekend, put the ball in play but could not find gaps to send runners home.Game 4The Scarlet and Gray’s second matchup against Virginia Tech resulted in a much tighter contest than the first. OSU won the game 6-5 after a back-and-forth struggle over seven innings. The Buckeyes rotated three pitchers onto the mound, starting in the second inning when Ray gave up two runs. Hursh earned the win with three innings pitched and five strikeouts, and McCombs received her first save of the season after stopping the Hokies’ offense in the final two innings. For OSU’s offense, extra-base hits made the difference. McIntyre opened the game with a double, followed by Leonard’s RBI double to left field. The Buckeyes then extended their lead to four in the second inning, after Prantl sent a solo shot over the centerfield fence and White and Gavin stole home. Virginia Tech responded in the bottom of the third inning when Hursh walked junior Elizabeth Birle with the bases loaded. A couple of batters later and the bases still loaded, Hursh walked sophomore center fielder Breanna Davenport for the Hokies’ second run of the inning. The Hokies’ redshirt freshman Chelsea Whitcomb walked six batters throughout her four innings on the mound. Two of those walks set up OSU runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth inning, and both scored after White doubled on her first and only hit Saturday. The Buckeyes’ narrow 6-4 lead tightened even more in the bottom of the fifth after two Virginia Tech hits through the gap moved freshman right fielder Emma Strouth to third base. Strouth then scored on McCombs’ wild pitch. The game came down to the bottom of the seventh inning, but Virginia Tech went down in order to cement the Buckeyes’ second win over the Hokies and fourth of the weekend.Game 5Even though OSU had more hits than its final opponent of the weekend, USC Upstate edged out the Buckeyes 2-0 on Sunday. The Spartans’ two runs came from a timely home run, while the Buckeyes could not execute at the plate to bring any of their eight runners left on base home. The first two innings were scoreless for both teams, despite a two-out double by Saibene in the second. The Buckeyes came close again in the third, when Prantl and Leonard each delivered a single with two outs, but the two seniors were left stranded on base.USC Upstate’s offense ignited in the bottom of the third, thanks to freshman second baseman Megan Obier’s leadoff double. Freshman left fielder Brittany Case then blasted a home run to center field, giving the Spartans their 2-0 advantage. The Buckeyes spent the next four innings trying to start a rally, but even with leadoff singles from Prantl and junior pinch hitter Jess Machovina, they could not get one sparked. The stars of the game were the pitchers of both teams: Hursh for the Buckeyes and junior Holly McKinnon, who came on in the first after only one batter, for the Spartans. Hursh struck out seven, while McKinnon collected eight of her own.Coming upThe Buckeyes do not see any action next weekend, but they are scheduled to head to Tempe, Arizona, from March 11 to 13 to face four opponents at the Arizona State Tournament. OSU’s first matchup is scheduled against No. 10 James Madison and is set to begin at 1 p.m. read more
