Chhattisgarh election | Widows of slain politicians in Dantewada by-election face-off

first_imgThe Dantewada Assembly by-election in Chhattisgarh is headed towards an emotionally charged battle with both the Congress and the BJP fielding widows of regional stalwarts slain by Maoists on separate occasions. The contest, to be held on September 23, became imminent after BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi was killed in a Maoist attack while on the stump in April, two days before the Lok Sabha election in Bastar, where he held ground as the lone BJP MLAs amid 11 Congressmen. Now, riding high on sentiment, his wife, Ojaswi Mandavi, has resolved to “carry forward her husband’s political legacy” and taken on former MLA Devti Karma, widowed after former Leader of the Opposition Mahendra Karma was killed in 2013.With both the parties locked in a see-saw battle for the seat, Mr. Karma won it in 2003, the first contest after the State was carved, while Mr. Mandavi wrested it the next election. In 2013, the seat wound up in the Congress kitty, after an emotionally high-strung battle went in Ms. Karma’s favour, who garnered sympathy votes. Yet in 2018, Mr. Mandavi snatched it back with a margin 2,172 votes. The stakes are high for the BJP, scrambling to gain a toehold in the Maoist-hit region, which went against the wind to pick a Congressman in the Lok Sabha election, when the BJP won nine of the 11 seats in the State. Having faced a drubbing in the Lok Sabha election months after winning 68 of the 90 Assembly seats, the Congress is looking to cement the party’s grip over the region. “The Congress is dependant on leaders from Bastar region like Minister Kawasi Lakhma and State Congress chief Mohan Markam,” said State Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi. “The BJP is trying to make an emotional appeal to voters. But, let’s be clear, while Mr. Karma was killed despite requests for adequate security cover for him, Mr. Mandavi broke the security protocol and was killed.” Claim rubbishedState BJP spokesperson Sanjay Shrivastava meanwhile rubbished the Congress claim that several BJP workers had switched over. “They have already lost the election and are trying hard to conjure up a negative perception against us.”last_img read more

Yankees vs Mets The Battle For New Yorks Heart

A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday found that, in a hypothetical Yankees vs. Mets World Series, 59 percent of New York City residents would root for the Yankees, and 37 percent would favor the Mets. The Yankees haven’t always had such a large lead on this question. So what influences the balance between Yankees and Mets fandom in New York? There isn’t a strong relationship between the Mets’ or Yankees’ winning percentages and New Yorkers’ Subway Series preferences. Nor does there seem to be much of a connection between the Yankees making the playoffs and whom New Yorkers would root for. Most sports fans want their team to win but know it often won’t. The Yankees are different. Winning isn’t hoped for. It’s expected. The Mets have a somewhat lower bar to clear. Quinnipiac’s polling suggests that in the battle for hearts and minds in the Big Apple, the Yankees’ success is baked in, assumed. The Mets making the playoffs is what appears to sway New Yorkers. The Mets came closest to parity with the Yankees after the 2006 season — the only season in the past 25 years when the Mets advanced further in the playoffs than the Yankees. The Mets shaved the Yankees’ advantage down to one point in a survey conducted a few months into the 2007 season. (Note: We assigned each poll to the prior season if it was conducted before the All-Star break.)But the Mets haven’t made the playoffs since 2006, and the fan base in New York has slowly slid toward the pinstripes. The 22 percentage-point gap in the most recent Quinnipiac survey was the second largest found. The Yankees held their largest lead in the Quinnipiac poll taken about midway through the 1998 season, when it had been 10 years since the Mets made the playoffs. For each additional year removed from a playoff appearance, the Mets fall by an average of about two more points behind the Yankees in a hypothetical Subway Series. We’re dealing with only nine data points, which means the relationship might not hold in future polling. And factors besides the Mets’ success contribute to whom New Yorkers support.Case in point: The biggest outlier above is a poll taken after the 1999 season, when the Mets had made the NL championship series. But the Yankees still held a 17 percentage-point edge in the Quinnipiac survey. Why? The Yankees were coming off three World Series wins in four years. This suggests that the Yankees have some control over New Yorkers’ hearts, even if the effect isn’t nearly as significant as the Mets’. read more

Coastal Radar misses illegal boat resident calls it in

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 13 Jul 2015 – Ninety nine Haitians tried to make it into Providenciales on the weekend, but the 27 foot wood sloop was detected; not by the coastal radar, instead it was spotted by what the police report called, and “unknown caller.” The Marine Branch led the interception on Saturday morning around 11:30am and found the 80 males and 19 females near the Bluff, off Provo. The boat was reportedly searched and nothing illegal was found. Border Control officers, Red Cross and Ministry of Health assisted in the processing of the 99 illegal migrants who are being held at the Detention Center off South Dock Road. It is unclear when the migrants will be repatriated. It is also unclear why the coastal radar missed the boat. Nanocomposite material provides photonic switching

center_img “There are many applications for this work,” Qihuang Gong tells PhysOrg.com. Gong, along with his colleagues Xiaoyong Hu, Ping Jiang, Cheng Xin, Hong Yang, demonstrated a nano-Ag:polymer composite material can be used for photonic switching. Their work appears in Applied Physics Letters: “Nano-Ag:polymeric composite material for ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching.”“The nonacomposite material is composed of Ag nanoparticles dispersed in a MEH-PPV matrix,” Gong explains. “MEH-PPV is a nonlinear organic conjugated polymer material.” He points out that the nano-Ag:MEH-PPV composite has a large nonlinear susceptibility and very fast response time under resonant excitation, making it ideal for ultrafast optical switching applications. “Ultrafast response is maintained by use of a fast energy transfer process.” The Chinese group found that it is possible to achieve a nonlinear response time of 35 ps.Join PhysOrg.com on FacebookIn order to experiment with the nanocomposite material, the Peking University group employed a method of femtosecond pump and probe. The Ag nanoparticles, and the MEH-PPV molecules, were resonantly excited by a pump laser. During this process, energy is transferred from the MEH-PPV molecules to the Ag nanoparticles. A delay line was used to change the temporal relations between the pump and probe pulses. “Under the excitation of the pump laser,” Gong explains, “the effective refractive index of the nano-Ag:MEH-PPV composite material changes, which leads to the changes of the photonic band gap and the transmittances of the probe laser.” When this happens, the switching effect is realized.Gong points out that this particular composite material is ideal for all-optical switching at fast speeds. “MEH-PPV possesses high environmental and thermal stability, high optical damage threshold, and good film quality,” he says. Additionally, this material is easy to manufacture, and can be produced using current technology. Gong also notes that this nano-Ag:MEH-PPV composite material has very good waveguide properties. “This approach can be used in practical applications now.”There are limits to this nanocomposite material, Gong concedes. One of the main issues is that, “the organic polymer matrix can be damaged by a strong mechanical force.” This means that the delicate material would need a certain level of careful handling in some cases. Gong also admits that the working wavelength is only about 800 nanometers. More study is needed, Gong says. “Our next steps are to study new approaches to achieving a large nonlinear susceptibility and a femtosecond nonlinear response time simultaneously.”By understanding how these composite materials work, it should be possible to create new materials that can provide a basis for smaller, more efficient devices.More information: Xiaoyong Hu, et. al. “Nano-Ag:polymeric composite material for ultrafast photonic crystal all-optical switching.” Applied Physics Letters (2009).
